Plan the detail with confidence01Choose the material in context
Place backsplash samples beside the actual cabinet and countertop samples. Look at them in daytime and evening lighting. A tile that appears white on a screen can read warmer, cooler or more reflective beside the other finishes.
Compare the selected product’s cleaning and installation guidance. Appearance alone does not establish suitability around a cooking area or compatibility with the supporting wall.
02Plan the layout before the first tile
Discuss the visual centre, tile direction, corners and the cuts beneath upper cabinets. Small changes to the starting point can alter where narrow cuts appear. Agree on how the pattern will meet windows, shelving and a range hood.
Review outlet and switch positions as part of the elevation. If changes are proposed, appropriate electrical work must be planned before the wall is finished.
03Make edges and transitions intentional
A backsplash needs a defined end where it meets an open wall, cabinet edge or window. Discuss the selected trim or finishing detail instead of assuming the tile can simply stop anywhere.
The counter-to-wall connection and changes of plane need suitable detailing for the chosen installation system. Confirm these details with the installer and product guidance rather than choosing solely for appearance.
04Coordinate the sequence
The cabinetry and countertop arrangement influence the backsplash dimensions. Confirm the relevant measurements and installation sequence before ordering materials or setting a start date.
Include protection of finished counters, outlet-cover adjustments, cleanup and the treatment of the existing wall in the proposed scope. Removal of an old backsplash may reveal repairs that need to be discussed.
