Bathroom Renovation Checklist: Plan Beyond the Tile
Tile and fixtures are the visible part of a bathroom renovation. The supporting surfaces, water-management details, service routes and access decisions deserve equal attention. Start with how the room will be used, then coordinate the complete scope.
Keep the everyday routine in view
List who uses the room and what needs to fit: a shower or tub, towels, toiletries, cleaning supplies and clear space around fixtures. Review door and drawer movement together. A larger vanity can add storage while making the entrance awkward; a compact vanity with better internal organization may be the more practical choice.
Discuss the complete shower assembly
Ask how the proposed shower system addresses the substrate, waterproofing, drain and changes of plane. Decorative tile is only one part of the assembly. Establish who supplies each component and who is responsible for installation details. A reference photo can communicate appearance, but it cannot specify what belongs behind the finished surface.
Coordinate fixtures before work begins
Share actual sink, faucet, toilet, shower trim and vanity specifications with the relevant installers. Confirm whether existing service locations will remain or move. Wall-mounted fixtures and recessed storage may need planning inside the wall. Include access for future maintenance, rather than choosing a layout that looks clean but conceals essential service points.
Plan light and moisture removal
Consider mirror lighting separately from general room lighting. Review ventilation routing and existing performance with the appropriate professional. Fixture appearance alone cannot establish suitability for a wet location or the required electrical work. Include ceiling and wall repairs associated with service changes in the estimate.
Check finish details at handover
Review grout appearance, tile edges, transition details, cabinet operation and the installation-specific care instructions. Ask when finishes can be exposed to normal cleaning and use. Different products have different curing and maintenance requirements; keep the actual product information instead of relying on a generic waiting period.
